Car journey cost calculator

Three of you are driving to the mountains, 300 kilometres away, and want to split the cost of the petrol fairly. All you need to know is how long the journey is, how many litres the car uses per 100 km and what a litre of fuel costs.

How it works

The fuel used is the distance multiplied by the consumption per kilometre, and the cost is the fuel used multiplied by the price per litre:

cost=distance⋅consumption100⋅price per litre

The journey is 300 km and the car uses 6.5 litres per 100 km, so over 300 km it uses

300⋅6.5100=19.5 l

At £1.30 a litre, that comes to

19.5⋅1.30=£25.35

and split three ways, that is 25.35÷3=8.45, so £8.45 per person. If you tick “There and back”, the calculator doubles the distance.

This is only the fuel. The calculator does not include parking, tolls or wear and tear on the car. You can work out your car’s fuel consumption with the fuel consumption calculator.
