Area of a rectangle

The area of a rectangle is the amount of space the rectangle takes up. A rectangle always has two pairs of equal sides; if all four sides are equal, it is a square. Let the lengths of two different sides be a and b. Then the area of the rectangle, which we denote A, is

A=a⋅b

The rectangle below has side lengths a = 5 and b = 2, so its area is

A=5⋅2=10
