Midpoint of a line segment calculator

The midpoint of a line segment is the point exactly halfway between its two endpoints. Its coordinates are the averages of the endpoints’ coordinates: add the two x values and divide by two, and do the same with the y values.

Point A ( , )
Point B ( , )

The midpoint of line segment AB is the point S(4, −2).

Line segment AB and its orange midpoint S, which divides it into two equal halves. On the axes, the coordinates of the midpoint lie exactly halfway between x_1 and x_2, and between y_1 and y_2

How it works

For points A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2), the midpoint is

S=(x1+x22, y1+y22)

For points A(2, 1) and B(6, −5), we work out the average of the x coordinates and then of the y coordinates:

2+62=82=4,1+(−5)2=−42=−2

So the midpoint is S(4, −2). A quick check: from A to S we moved 2 to the right and 3 down, and from S to B we moved 2 to the right and 3 down again. To find how far apart the points are, use the calculator for the distance between two points.
