Volume of a cube

A cube is also known as a hexahedron. Let’s see what it looks like:

Cube

It is a three-dimensional solid made up of six faces, each of which is a square. All the edges of a cube therefore have the same length. We work out the volume in the same way as for other solids: we find the area of the square ABGH and multiply it by the “height” of the square, that is, the length of the edge BD. Since all the edges have the same length, the formula is very simple. The volume V of a cube with edge length a is

V=a⋅a⋅a=a3

For example, if our cube had edge length 12, we would work out its volume as

V=12⋅12⋅12=1 728
